Relocation Astrology Tutorial: Gemini Rising in Hawaii

Today's topic: my relocation astrology chart for Kona Hawaii, which gives Gemini as my rising sign.

What does that translate into in prectical, real-life terms? First, after months of keeping everyone up to date on the astro relocation scene on an almost daily basis, there's been a revolution, I haven't made a single post since the middle of last month.

I've been in classes here, studying Huna, the native Hawaiian traditions and culture, since August 21, and my social life outside of class keeps me busy playing with class mates. A nice duo, an example of what a switch to Gemini rising can do when it raises its playful, curious consciousness.

Playing with classmates? I've been boogie boarding, horseback riding, snorkeling, hanging out at Lava Java Cafe, cooperating in practical jokes, swimming in The Queen's Bath, singing, and shopping. All Gemini, every little bit.

I've been to the City of Refuge, the city of Kona, seen the Noni trees and other plants at Lapakahi State Park, meditated on the activity at the crater Halemaumanu. I've stretched out on the cinder surface of Mauna Kea after sunset to find my guiding star sparkling in the night sky. That's the night sky as seen from 9,000 feet above sea level, free from light pollution.

I'm a gal who's never been this far west before, so this new exposure to Gemini rising's a little taste of new joy. On the other hand, a rather Gemini way to close this post, I'm also looking forward to getting home to Leo rising on Friday. And back to work on Monday. Relocation Astrology Tutorial: Jupiter and Income

The topic for todya's relocation astrology tutorial looks at Jupiter and income in the relocated chart.

Traditionally, having expansive Jupter located in the second house, in a harmonious relationship to the Midheaven, or conjunct the MC/IC (10th/4th house) axis is considered a "slam-dunk as far as generating income is concerned. But it isn't always possible to have that happen in a relocation chart created for living right here in ordinary reality. I could enjoy that second-house benefit myself, if I want to move to the eastern Maritime Provinces of Canada, to Greenland, or to any of several cities on the eastern edge of South America. However, while I find that many of those are places I look forward to visiting, no, I don't want to move there. So what's a gal like me -- and maybe somebody like you -- to do? I lean on a number of other factors in my relocated chart.

Yes, I'm living a relocated chart, one that shows other factors benefitting my financial health. And you can, too. As a relocation astrologer, if Jupiter's not blessing your second house, I check the basic structure of your birth chart for other natal financial benefits and challenges. Then I check the aspects to the relocated second house cusp and Midheaven, aspects to second, eight and tenth house planets or asteroids, the list of declinations and the upcoming transits to see what else is in play. And I do that for each of your proposed locations, to see which is the best fit for you.

So even if Jupiter's not radiating warmth in your house of finance, all is not lost. There are other ways to bring in a good harvest, and relocation astrology can point you, literally, in the right direction.

Relocation Astrology Tutorial: The Fourth House

Today's relocation astrology tutorial focus is the fourth house of the chart.

Located at the visual bottom of the circle, the fourth house represents one's early childhood home and also one's current home. But it's even more significant than that: the fourth house is the place in the chart that hosts our core beliefs, those ideas which we've integrated so deeply into our psyches that it never occurs to us to question that world view.

Relocation astrology charts frequently show a sign change on the fourth house cusp, compared to the natal chart. That apparently small astrological shift indicates the amount and quality of inner reorientation required in the new, or proposed, location.

The necessary shift in inner dynamics can be either easy -- "I feel so at home!" -- or challenging, of course. In either case, it's comforting to have an indicator of the re-formation of life-as-you've-known-it involved in any move. One of the great gifts of relocation astorlogy is the opportunity to try a new fourth house on for size, just to see how it's likely to fit, and where you're likely to need to make some inner alterations.

Astrology Tutorial: Eclipse Cycle Closing; Pluto to station

Today's astrology tutorial post looks at the close of the current eclipse cycle, and retrograde Pluto slowing to station.

The first of the two events -- a total eclipse in parts of the world -- happened on August 1. The second is due tomorrow, August 16. What dos the conclusion of this cycle suggest on a mundane level?

First, it suggests a few weeks of integration. All who have experienced this time in between as a massive reshuffling of interior priorities can look forward to life moving into alignment with these new changes. All who have experienced significant exterior changes can expect both inner world and outer world to begin to flow in an easier harmony with the new circumstances, situation or location.

Pluto will still be moving retrograde, but slowing to station -- getting ready to go direct -- during this time, so circumstances both wtihin the soul and out in the world are poised for empowering the "new you," the "new me" and, both nationally and globally, the "new us." An interesting time for national political conventions in the United States, isn't it?

Astrology Tutorial: Retrograde Planets, A Summer Overview, part 5: Neptune

Today's astrology tutorial: retrograde Neptune, summer 2008.

Neptune continues sloshing retrograde in Aquarius for the next few months. In this retrograde cycle he offers us a powerful opportunity for personal clarity.

Metaphorically, and perhaps historically, with Neptune retrograde, the fog is burning off. My personal image for this comes from having more than once spent a fair amount of June at the edge of the ocean in Downeast Maine. Whatever your personal metaphor, you know how wonderful it is when the fog clears and you can see all the way to the horizon. And how startling it can be to realize that thoughts born or strengthened when the fog covered the landscape are now revealed as understandable but also, well, funny, awkward, or just plain wrong.

Like the story of the driver on the highway following the tail lights of another car in deep fog, grateful for the signpost the tail lights provided. Until he -- or she -- suddenly crashes into the car ahead.

"What's the matter with you?" the second driver shouts. "Why did you stop short in the middle of the road?"

"I'm in my garage," the first driver replies.

Ouch. What's up with Neptune retrograde? In short, the sun's coming out and our ostrich habits are in danger of becoming painfully visible. We have choices to make over the next few months, folks. Will we continue in ostrich stance and pretend we're not vulnerable to lightning? Or will we -- will you? will I? -- lift up our heads and realize the sky's not falling. It's just changing color due to a change in the weather, and we have work to do.

Maybe it's time for some good old gospel music. Or maybe a few hundred choruses from the work of Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan or Graeme Edge.

In my next post I'll add a little spice to the cosmic stew cooked up in us reflected in the action of these four summer retrogrades. We're in an active eclipse cycle. Next posting, August 10.

Astrology Tutorial: Retrograde Planets, A Summer Overview, part 4: Pluto

Today's astrology tutorial: retrograde Pluto, summer 2008.

Pluto's current retrograde started last spring. He'd enjoyed a brief introduction to the sign of Capricorn, but he decided to take another brief foray back into Sagittarius, his last Saggitarian "hurrah" in the life span of anyone on earth today.

He's still moving "backward" in Sagittarius, encouraging all of us to clean up any stray loose ends while he's there, financially, and in any other ways that might limit our ability to be truly present for ourselves and each other in the forseeable future. He asks us to strengthen the foundations we've put in place. He asks us to polish up the spiritual values we may have learned about or learned from, but might have forgotten to cherish, since the middle of the 1990s. He continues this prompting until he moves to station and then apparently shifts direction in a little more than a month from now, on September 8.

When Pluto moves direct in September, he'll ask us to begin to build on those foundations we've built over the last (more or less) fifteen years. Won't it be easierto do if at least the excavation's already begun?

Won't it be easier if you've already considered your possible ability to help, respond to one or two of the world's needs?

Pluto always asks us to ask a lot of ourselves. Pluto brings the power of transformation right into our own back yards. Right now, he's putting us on notice.

"Wake up!", he whispers. Or maybe he's already begun to speak more loudly in your life.

"You're stronger than you know, more capable and resourceful," he persists. "You're more loving and lovable than you ever imagined. And the world needs you. Wake up!"

Astrology Tutorial: Retrograde Planets, A Summer Overview, part 3: Uranus

Today's astrology tutorial: retrograde Uranus, summer 20008.

Uranus is strolling "backward" through Pisces, currently at 22 degrees. He'll keep moving until coming to station at 18 degrees Pisces on Thanksgiving day: November 27, slightly after 4 pm GMT. What can we expect in the interim?

Personally, of course, the way that plays out depends on which house, or houses, Pisces occupies in your birth chart. Drum roll, please, while we look at what it implies more collectively.

For one thing, there's Uranus retrograde signifying a smoothing out of erratic, perhaps violent, behavior. Currently, there's growing public sentiment that it's time to ratchet-down the activities of the war (both Uranus and Pluto) machine (Uranus, again). Could we be in the midst of backstage plans being created -- even now, in the dog days of summer -- to honor our commitment to world leadership, to international relations, and to our troops, by bringing those troops home?

Then there are the archetypes of Uranus as Visionary, Uranus as Outsider, and the blue lightning bolt of Uranian clarity. Are we getting a cosmic photo of Barack Obama here?

Of course, I'm always aware of Uranus as The Unexpected, so though, in Pisces, Uranus retrograde can be easily interpreted as "unusually smooth sailing", I also know better than to make a prediction based on any single transit alone.

Especially when that transit coincides with my hopes and dreams (Pisces again). It would be just too easy to fall into wish fulfillment here instead of astrology, so it's time to bring this post to a close before I step over my ethical boundaries!

Astrology Tutorial: Retrograde Planets, A Summer Overview, part 2: Jupiter

Today's astrology tutorial post starts a look at the specifics of our summer retrogrades: Jupiter in Capricorn, Uranus in Pisces, Neptune in Aquarius and Pluto in Sagittarius. Today the focus in Jupiter.

Jupiter's midway through Capricorn, at 14 degrees. He started moving retrograde on May 9 at 22+ degrees of the sign and will continue "backing up" until he turns direct at 12+ degrees Capricorn on September 8. He'll get back to 22.22 degrees, where the retrograde started, on the second of December. That's a six-month time of introspection focused on expansion; hope deflated and hope reconfigured; and/or inflation. Will what we experience collectively by December pertain to an easing (Jupiter) in the realm of apparently limited world resources, particularly pertroleum, coal and other heating products, or not? Will it refer to an expansion of compassionate understanding (Jupiter) and solid plans of action (Capricorn) on the part of those in leadership positions (Capricorn as well)?

Or will we need a time of cold -- physically, and perhaps on other levels of experience (Capricorn) -- to bring us to a willingness to embrace self-discipline (Capricorn again) for the benefit of all concerned (Jupiter)?

Let's each take a look at the drive behind our personal ambition. Is it fear of lack, and the narrow visual field that perceives others as pawns in a game we're meant to "win", just other rungs on a ladder we're meant to "climb? That's all a twist on Capricorn moticated by greed. What if we were to seek the deeper truth of Capricorn which Jupiter illuminates. Let's set to the plain old hard work of living together, trusting that what we need is at hand (Jupiter), and that we have both the core strength and flexibility to do what needs to be done to benefit us all (Jupiter and Capricorn together).

Astrology Tutorial: Retrograde Planets, A Summer Overview, part 1

Today's astrology tutorial is retrograde planets, and what they mean in astrology. I've written about retrograde Mercury before, but retrograde motion is something that we on Earth "see" in regard to the other planetary bodies as well.

Retrograde motion is the name we give to what we see when, from our point of view, a planet seems to be moving backward against the apparent backdrop of the zodiac belt. It isn't, atually (see earlier posts about Mercury retrograde and retrograde motion), but while it appears that way to us, it's a signal to look within. It's a signal to turn our attention away from our same-old, same-old habitual behaviors and see if certain shifts are occurring in our inner landscapes.

At this point in Earth's sojourn around the sun and our solar system's sojourn through the galaxy, we experience more retrigrade motion than at any other time of year. In summer, 4 or 5 planets often seem to move retrograde at the same time. Currently, we're experiencing retrograde Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

How, and how much, they have an effect on each of us personally depends on which planet's moving retrograde, and in which sign of the zodiac, of course, but also on the factors in each individual's chart. The impulse to look within is a retrograde "universal", but what aspect of your life is the catalyst for the introspection depends on the houses involved, and what planetary aspects in your chart the current retrograde movement touches by its transiting -- temporary -- aspect.

But though the transits are tmporary, we have the opportunity to learn form each one of them. That way we keep the benefits, long after the transits are history instead of curent experience.

Interpreting the aspects in a chart is an astrologer's job, but only part of her job. The rest is communicating her interpretation to her client in a way that not only meets the cient where he or she is, but also helps the client grow in comapssion and courage. After all, the astrologer's expertise is the chart and its language. The client's the one living the life.

The client is giving birth to his or her life, every moment. The astrologer's a midwife: at best, skilled and experienced and, hopefully, focused on creating a climate through which the client moves into greater self-understanding and empowerment.

Today's astrology tutorial topic? How astrology works.

In astrology, the mathematical relationships between the positions of the sun, moon, other celestial bodies and a few abstract points are called astrological aspects. When they happen at a specific point in space and time that a person enters the world, in astrology we call that the birth chart. In life we simply call it birth.

Aspects also happen by celestial bodies' current movements in relation to a birth chart -- that's called "by transit". In astrology, the transits act like stage lighting. They focus our attention on certain parts of the birth chart, just as stage lights fraw our attnetion to the actors and props that are most important to the flow of hte action sa the play moves along. In life we call these transiting aspects growth and development.

So an astrology chart isn't about something outside ourselves. It's a description of a star in human dorm, shining out into the world. And that's h ow it works: it describes the light within us, mirrored in the lights out there.

Astrology Tutorial: A Long Rant on Why Astrology Works

Today's astrology tutorial topic is why astrology works. At least, according to me.

Sometimes people ask me how things as far away as the sun, moon, the planets and other celestial bodies can possibly have an effect on human lives. I tell them that distance doesn't matter.

I believe that's not because those celestial bodies are so strong that they're overwhelming, but because the human psyche is so beautifully potent. We're both stunningly simple and incomprehensibly complex at the same time. And all the aspects in every astrology chart are expression of those inner dynamics. The chart never compels, but simply shows in the world what's going on within -- with the astrological chart and transits to it acting as mirror.

So, do I believe we're all guilty of our illnesses, mistakes and the horrors of our lives and in the world? No, I don't.

Do I know why those things happen? No, I don't. Jesus asks us to risk loving ourselves and one another anyway, and to try to step back from the glorificaton of martyrdom through which that direction is often interpreted. The Buddha says our enemies are ignorance, denial, and avoidance.

We all believe something. I believe them.

I believe there's purpose to our being, purpose to our lives. If, as I suspect, that purpose is to grow in compassion, it seems we haven't figured out yet how to do that with joy. So here we are, companions on spaceship Earth, afraid to look one another in the eye.

Maybe right now pain is our most potent learning tool. Maybe, as the courage of so many desperately ill or injured children have taught their parents, teachers and caregivers, it's not about guilt. It's about courage. there's another way.

That's what I believe the compassionate and accurate interpretation of an astrology chart can offer: a template for the courage to grow in comassion of self and others. It's a glimpse in a mirror that connects the individual to the cosmos. It's a mirror in whihc we see ourselves and otehrs and part of a much larger plan.

The sun, the moon, the planets, asteroids and everything out there are mirros in which we can see ourselves, and still hold ourselves and others in copmpassion. The cleestial bodies and we come from the same source. As the old song says, We are stardust. We are golden. And we've got to find our way back to the Garden.

The key is in the door. (OK, so I first typed, The key id in the door. That, too) For some, the key is the language of astrology. It's a language meant to enlighten, not to compel. And that's why it works.

Rhode Island as a Relocation Astrology Tutorial Site

Rhode Island was great: rain and sunshine, classes and beach time. I enjoyed the company of new friends and old friends I haven't seen in a year or so. One glitch: soon after I arrived, I realized my cell phone hadn't made the entire trip with me. And that's a segue for a relocation astrology tutorial and an astrology tutorial.

My relocation astrology chart for the area has the Cancer/Capricorn axis intercepted. When a pair of opposing signs are intercepted in any chart -- by relocation, or otherwise -- it's often a creative challenge to access the energy contained in that sign. Keywords for Capricorn include limitation, focus, responsibility, organization. Keywords for Cancer include home, and mother. I wans't able to "phone home" to the Berkshires, or to contact my 95 year old mother in western NY without a phone debit card; not a crisis, but mildly inconvenient.

While I was there, a specific transit was in play, too. Jupiter's retrograde movement in Capricorn triggered my tenth house North Node in Gemini (communication, the jester). Capricorn and Gemini are 150 degree apart, as you count around the circle. When focal points in two signs 150 degrees apart touch very precisely, the aspect is called "quincunx". That means, no easy point of contact; no way for the signs to communicate without effort.

All I remembered, in retrospect, was closing up the phone and putting it in my bag. The only place I'd stopped was one of the fueling stations on the Mass Pike. Maybe, I thought, it had been on my lap and dropped onto the pavement when I got out of the car. on my lap. Shaking my head wryly at the irony and precision of the aspects -- yes, this is the only time i've lost my cell phone -- I de-activated it.

But Gemini, the cosmic Communications Jester, wasn't through with me yeet. Two days later I found out my phine wasn't on my trip to Rhode Island at all. I'd closed it up and dropped it. That part of the memory was clear enough. But I'd been in a friend's car at home in Berkshire County when it happened. So the jester had fun with me at the beach, and my re-activated phone was waiting for me when I got back home.

What zodiac signs do Uranus, Neptune, Pluto rule? Look at the list in #1 of this astrology tutorial series to find out.

When, late in 2003, Sedna was discovered, the astrological question rose, Which sign does Sedna rule? Some people say that she might be the (secondary) ruler of Virgo. For those folks, the Virgo line in part 1 of this astrology tutorial series would read:
Virgo Mercury (Sedna).

Some other folks think she rules Virgo alone. That rulership may eventually be proven true, and though it's way too early to be certain, there's something very appealing to me about that placement. Virgo comes into her own as an adult when she realizes that her fabled capacity for obedience is best applied as obedience to the Still, Quiet Voice within her. As the sixth sign of the zodiac, Virgo completes the cycle of individuation, which has much to do with obedience to the still, small interior voice of Compassionate Wisdom. If the girl who grew into the figure whom Inuit mythology calls Sedna wasn't just being a spoiled brat when she refused to marry the man her father chose for her, then she was speaking the truth of her individuation.

Others speak of her affinity for Taurus, and I can make a case for both Capricorn and Aquarius. Hmm. And various parts of her story align with Scorpio, Aries, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Pisces, too.

Maybe Sedna, like Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, has an ffinity for one sign but also ups the ante for all of them by infusing each one with a new level of meaning, challenge and opportunity. We'll see; I think it's true, but more research is definitely necessary.

What zodiac signs do Uranus, Neptune, Pluto rule? Look at the list in #1 of this astrology tutorial series to find out. Or consider this: maybe the more accurate answer is "none", or "all of them".

The old-style list discussed in yesterday's post is, in the mathematical sense, quite elegant, much more so than the list used from 1930-2003, the list from this series' post #1. Perhaps, as I prefer to think, the trans-Saturnian celestial bodies really do operate "outside the box", just as being outside the orbit of Saturn used to imply. Maybe they influence all twelve signs, each in their own way. Maybe Sedna does, too.

Astrology Tutorial: Zodiac Signs & Rulers, 2

This is part 2 of the astrology tutorial called Zodiac Signs and Rulers.

Old-style zodiac sign rulership only considers the Lights, which are the Sun and the Moon, and the planets that can be seen with the naked eye, Mercury through Saturn. The old-style list looks like this when you write the zodiac signs in order:

Aries is ruled by Mars.
Taurus? Venus.
Gemini? Mercury.
Cancer? the Moon.
Leo? the Sun.
Virgo? Mercury.
Libra? Venus.
Scorpio? Mars.
Sagittarius? Jupiter.
Capricorn? Saturn.
Aquarius? Saturn.
Pisces? Jupiter.

But look at what happens when you list the signs and their old-style rulers this way:

The Sun rules Leo (sign 5) and the Moon rules Cancer (sign 4).
Mercury rules Virgo (sign 6) and Mercury rules Gemini (sign 3).
Venus rules Libra (sign 7) and Venus rules Taurus (sign 2).
Mars rules Scorpio (sign 8) and Mars rules Aries (sign 1).
Jupiter rules Sagittarius (sign 9) and Jupiter rules Pisces (sign 12).
Saturn rules Capricorn (sign 10) and Saturn rules Aquarius(sign 11).

Starting with the Sun at the top of the left column, the list of zodiac sign rulers moves out from the sun in order, Mercury to Saturn.

Then, starting at the bottom of the column on the right, the list of rulers moves from Saturn, the farthest planet that can be seen with the naked eye, in to Mercury, then to the Moon, which reflects the Sun, right over there at the top of the list on the left. The flow of energy moves counterclockwise that way, but the list still holds up if you start with the sun and jump to the moon, move out to Saturn and then climb the column on the right back to the Sun, all in clockwise fashion. Beautiful, isn't it?

Beautiful but incomplete. What about Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and Sedna?

Astrology Tutorial: Zodiac Signs & Rulers, 1

The phrase zodiac signs and their rulers sounds a little like astrology's hosting the royal families of Europe. Actually, the phrase refers to a list of the 12 astrology signs, each one paired with one or more of the planets, the sun or the moon. The pairing depends on how much affinity the sign and the celestial body happen to have with each other. A sign's "ruler" is the planet, planets, or light with which it's most compatible. Here's the list, as it stood between 1930 and 2003:

Cancer the Moon
Leo the Sun

Scorpio Mars (Pluto)

Personally, I prefer to amend the old-style list of rulerships. That's the list of zodiac signs with their traditional rulers from the time before the discovery of the telescope. And that's the subject of tomorrow's post.

In my natal astrology chart and in the relocation astrology chart I live in my current home, my rising sign is Leo. In Chile, it's Leo, too. But that's not true everywhere.

I'm the first to insist that the astrology chart never compels anythig; free will is always available, at least in response to whatever "is" at an given time and place. Still, it's fascinating to feel the chemistry change that comes with a shift of rising sign.

In Maine, where I vacation every summer, my rising sign is Virgo. That doesn't sound restful to you? Ah, but Virgo is my sun sgn, too, and in this location I feel at home in an obscure fishing village with a population thaaat swells to 350 people during high summer. It's where I freely indulge my passion for gathering with a few good friends to indulge in handcrafts, seafood and story-sharing, completely TV-free. It's one of my definitions of bliss.

My rising sign shifted to Libra when I visited the Orkney Islands last year, where I came home to a community I never expected to feel so tangibly my own. While I've always known the British Isles as prominent in my bloodline, as someone with a U.S passport, I never expected the visceral sense of family I felt all the time I stood on Scottish soil. And I felt even more at home in the Neolithic sites still standing there.

In what was then still Yugoslavia, my rising sign is Scorpio. There, very unlike the self I generally recognize as me, I never communucated with anyone stateside for almost two weeks. The Iron Curtain was still in place, and, once through the mountain tunnel and across the border, I was deeper into Scopio territory in more ways than one. Approproately enough, this was 1990, and Yugoslavia was simmering with the violence that shredded the country less than a year later. Intense, simmering, driving along the highway, into Mostar and Sarajevo was like driving through an unreleased Humphrey Bogart film. Scorpio incarnate!

On the other hand, in San Francisco where my rising sign is Cancer, several folks suggested I could have a great career teaching astrology to children. I can hardly wait to see what happens when my rising sign shifts to Gemini, in Hawaii at the end of August!

When you contact me about relocation astrology, we'll start a dialogue to see if working together is right for us. We each have different areas of expertise that we'll tap into, even during our initial conversation.

You'll tell me about the possible move in your future. I'll listen attentively to what you have to say, and ask a few clarifying questions. We'll probably discover one or two more things to chat about while we're talking, and you'll get a sense of who I am and the way I work.

From my point of view, I'm the one with the relocation astrology know-how, and you're the final authority on the life we'll be discussing. That makes me the relocation astrology expert and gives you the responsibility and freedom to decide whether or not you accept my professionl advice. After all, while I can give you an astrological map of the territory, you're the one who ultimately decides whther or not to get on the road and follow that advice. As we acknowledge both kinds of authority, we're more likely to have a well-balanced interaction.

Sedna in Natal, Relocation and in Relationship Astrology

When the Taurus/Scorpio polarity is emphasized in a chart, whether it's a natal, relocation or relationship chart, the position of Sedna comes up to be considered and discussed. How can the Taurus/Scorpio polarity be emphasized? Lots of ways.

Maybe one or the other sign is in the Ascnedant or Midheaven. Maybe one sign is, or both are, heavily weighted with sun, moon, planetary or asteroid placement. Maybe one or more glyphs

She's an active player in the chart in any of these cases, and as an astrologer, my choices are to let her continue to work as a silent power behind the scenes, or to behave like Toto when he pulled the curtain back to revela the Wizard of Oz. The benefits of behaving like Toto are immense. But the all add up to this: with Sedna revealed as an active player previously under wraps, then the client gets to see who's perhaps been pulling strings that actually belong to the client's conscious will. In other words, Dorothy gets to go home and the odds of having a movie with a happy ending improve immensely.

So whether or not you ever become my client, make sure you ask your astrologer about Sedna. The earlier she's introduced in the session, the more free you as client become to click your ruby slippers together three times and find your best way home.

Astrology Tutorial: Sun and Earth Opposition

There's an astrological silence, an invisible hum that surrounds a polarity in every astrology chart: the opposition connecting the Sun and Earth. Almost nobody, astrologer or client, talks about the position of Earth in the astrology chart, even though it's so easy to find. Earth is always exactly 180 degrees from wherever the sun is in the chart.

Even though it's easy to find, using Earth's position in reading a chart immediately starts astrolger and client both focusing on the opposions that tell us an uncomfortable truth. The 12 signs of the zodiac are actually six pairs of signs, not twelve individual, unrelated images. They're yang and yin, indivisibe as the front and back of a five dollar bill.

I'm a Virgo sun sign, so the Earth is in the sign of Pisces in my chart. Where is it in yours? And what might embracing our Earth signs, so opposite to the dear behaviors so cherished in our sun signs, mean to each of us in terms of self-understanding and compassion? It sounds worth trying. And, as the last two posts suggest, Sedna would be pleased.

OH, maybe it's more (Virgo) honest to say that I, as Sedna's interpreter, would be pleased.

Maybe in some Piecean, oceanic, tidal way, she would, too.

What about Sedna in Taurus?
In Taurus, Sedna explores the concepts of love and loyalty. Here she experiences what it means when the two conflict. Here, too, is where she was at the time of her arrival into our conscious awareness in 2003, so Taurus is the sign where she settles in for the long haul as a potent archetype in twenty-first century astrology.

In Scorpio Sedna explores the use of power. How has she she used her power as an established figure in Inuit cosmology? How has power been used in relation to her, for or against her and her seafaring children? How does she respond today? And where does her power have authority? Is she still bound tot he Arctic, or is she Empress of the One Ocean, the sea without boundaries that isn't confined to minds or maps?

Today's astrology tutorial: the shamanic world view, the birth chart, and Sedna.

To shorthand yesterday's post, Sedna's mythology is implicit both in the shamanic perceptions common to Neolithic times and to the wildly individualized sense of isolation from the unity of all life common in mainstream North America today. What gifts might Sedna offer as a glyph in the birth chart when we consider both the sign she's in, and its other face?

From the end of the 19th entury -- that's the 1800s, folks -- into the transition years, 1965 into 1968, Sedna roamed through Aries. It was all unknown to us at the time, of course, and stayed that way until 2004.

So, about Sedna in Aries?
It's her childhood story: rebellion or individuation, depending on your point of view.
Sedna in Libra, then? It reflects the point of view held by the social network surrounding her.

Sedna in Aries/Libra?
This is her childhood story in its fiullness: the child's point of view and the perspective of the culture in which she's living.This full story raises questions about the violence born from the mind and heart unwilling or unable to see another's point of view; how the society of the person whose chart is being read perceives abstract ideas like justice for all; and the place and the pursuit of beauty in the culture.

Astrology Tutorial: the Sun, Astroarcheology, the Orkneys, and Sedna

Topics for today's astrology tutorial: the Sun, astroarcheology, and Sedna.

The sun's apparent journey around the Earth -- and, yes, of course, it's Earth's journey around ths Sun -- was important in Neolithic cosmology. It was so significant, in fact, that a series of markings at the Ring of Brodghar measured the amount of distance the sun's place for rising moved across the landscape in twenty-four hour periods. I'm no astroarcheologist, of course; the Orkneys are my sole Neolithic experience. Nevertheless, the evidence at Brodghar got me thinking about what we measure today and, more importantly, why we do it.

Many of our current measurements relate to finance, of course, but that's not new. Study and speculation both state that ancient cuneiform writing began as a way to compute stores of grain and other reserves. Building structures and roads has required measuring since before history began. Like the Neolithics, we, too, measure the movements of celestial bodies, but here one of the biggest difference between their times and ours slips to the fore.

We measure distances between, say, the sunrise from a given point on Earth from one day to the next, or the distance between Sedna and the Sun, as if we were drawing a line between two otherwise-isolated locations. In other words, today we think in terms that make it possible to say that, when we measure, what matters is the line we draw between two otherwise independent points, and the ideas we have about what that line might mean,

That's probably unlike like the Neolithics. They may have measured movement as a factor of active relationship among parts within a vital whole, and they seem to have experienced themselves as inseparable from that whole as well. While Neolithic sky-tracers would be stunned at the depths we can see into the Universe, astroarcheology can teach us even more about living here on Earth, at one and at peace. After all, general archeology of the Orkney sites -- as distinct from astroarcheology -- suggets that none of the human remains discovered from the time the sites were active showed any sign of death by violence. How's that for peering deep into the heart of Life?

Since Neolothic time is when Sedna was at the nether end of her solar orbit, and now, less than 5 years after her discovery of hre presence, her mythology is implicated both in their times and ours. What might her mythology mean to us as we explore Sedna as a glyph in the birth chart, and considered both the sign she's in, and its other face? So far, we have the same kind of astrological silence around this question as the invisible hum that surrounds another commonly unacknowledged polarity in the chart: the opposition relationship connecting the Sun and Earth.

Sp, what about Sedna in Aries/Libra? What about Sedna in Taurus/Scorpio? I'm working consciously with this paradigm. I do so just as I read a birth or relocation chart: in a shamanic manner: with one foot in ordinary reality and the other in non-ordinary reality. I do so in a shamanic manner: supported, surrounded by, and obedient to spiritual wisdom I consciously invoke and honor. I do so in a shamanic manner, a 21st century traveller inseparable from the Whole.

Sedna, the Orkneys, and the Neolithic Sites

Sedna's length of stay in each of the signs depends on where she is in her huge solar orbit. When she's at a turning point, near the sun as she is now, or farthest away, as she was 5,500 - 5,000 years ago in Neolithic times, she moves through the signs quickly. She'll spend a hundred years or so in Aries or Libra; less than a hundred years in Taurus or Scorpio. That's only an eye-blink, in a cycle that spans 10,000-11,000 years.

These are Earth-years I'm talking about, of course. Here on our planetary homeplace, figuring human experience in multiples of Sedna-years hardly computes. After all, the Neolithic sites in the Orkneys were still under construction just six Sedna-months ago .

in August 2007, I followed the influence of Sedna on my sun sign and in my tenth house to the Orkney Islands, on a vision quest to the Ring of Brodgar, Midhowe, Unsted, and other Neolithic sites. Among many other blessings, the experience opened me to the whole fascinating field of astroarcheology.

When the Orney sites were built, they were aligned with the midwinter sun, and with the movement of Venus. At that time, Sedna was at her farthest point from the sun, her farthest from the earth. I think it's fitting, somehow, that her discovery and the field of astroarcheology -- exploration of the crossover between celestial body alignments and the orientation of Neolithic sites like these -- came into public awareness at around the same time. Maybe by using the two as lenses focused together we'll unlock some of the secrets of Neolithic culture. Maybe in mainstream North America later in the twenty-first century, we'll stand again with one foot in ordinary reality and the other in non-ordinary reality, the shamanic stance as a way of life. It's a possible, even probable, fulfillment of Sedna in Taurus. Are you ready?

Sedna in Aries, Taurus and Gemini

Unbenownst to anyone born in 1866, right after the end of the unpleasantness between the North and South in the then more or less still-United States, Sedna had just moved into the sign of Aries, where she stayed until the turbulent '60s decade a century later.

Still under wraps, she moved into Taurus during the years 1965-1968, and she was at 16 degrees Taurus when she was discovered in 2003. She stays in the sign for another 15 years or so. On January 1, 2023, she's at 28 degrees Taurus. By January 1, 2025, she's at 0 degrees Gemini. And, of course, there'll be the usual overlap of direct and retrograde movement until she settles into her new sign.

Today's astrology tutorial post looks at Sedna in the natal chart by sign.

For all of us alive now, Sedna's either in Aries or Taurus in our birth charts. One of the differences in that placement is that those born with Sedna in Aries may have experienced the fragmentation of her personal story as the story of their times, a metaphor for the firt two thirds of the 20th century. Those already born, or born soon, with her glyph in Taurus may experience her phoenix- or Pluto-like transition from turbulence into transformation as their cultural story. For them, she shifts from outcast and angry Inuit goddess into whole-world icon calling for change. For those born now through the end of Sedna's stay in Taurus, her continuing transformation into nurturing World Mother may be the story the tell around their virtual, or actual, campfires as the story of their times.

In NLP terms, those with Aries in their charts grew up in a world that saw differences first, as Aries would indicate. Before the energy overlay of the previous Sedna placement in Pisces faded into history, differences was considered suspect. (In NLP-speak, Pisces sees only sameness, no differences at all.) Nevertheless, change was in the wind. About halfway through the Sedna in Aries cycle, women in ther United States were granted the right to vote. When the Sedna Aries cycle was almost complete, various counterculture movements burst forth to declare in vivid color, in vibrant song, in lifestyle, in education and voting rights, that difference enriches, that Black is beautiful, that women have authentic identity in our own right. Angry, yes, but also vital, their breakthroughs paved the way for those with Taurus in the chart to have the world they grew/grow up one that sees sameness as enriched by diversiy.

And, yes, of course, all of us alive now lives through all these cycles individually, more or less consciously, each in our own personal time frame, since this cycle is "our time" and we're both "products of" and co-creators of our time as well.

Sedna in Natal Astrology, part 1

Today's Astrology tutorial is about Sedna. Her placement isn't used too much in astrology readings yet. After all, she was either in the sign of Aries or in Taurus in the charts of anyone born during the whole of the twentieth century. Since she moves so slowly, many astrologers assume she's not an active player in the lived experience of the astrology chart. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sedna matters in the birth chart. She matters even more in astrologcal relationship readings and in relocation astrology, but for today I'll only focus on Sedna in the natal chart.

Sedna acts, in part, as an astrological focal point through which we experience profound opportunities for individuation by confronting how we relate to the archetype of "the outcast".

Is "the outcast" a role we take on through identification? If so, do we do so as victim? Or are "the outcast" people, circumstances or parts of ourselves we look down on? Do "they" have other identifying characteristics like poverty, illness, lack of popularity, or some other unattractiveness? If so, do we prevent contamination through avoiding the reality of their actual life experience? Or do we identify with them as their champion?

If "the outcast" are a group we identify through denial, the ones who are "different from me" or "different from us", are they the folks we'd toss to the wolves in order to save ourselves? Or are they perhaps the ones who are so popular, so well-loved, so wealthy, healthy, or wise that we cast them out of our lives through our envy? And which parts of ourselves have we cast away, too, in order to buy our own small experience of love, popularity, wealth, health, or acknowledged wisdom?

Sedna asks these and many other hard questions; perhaps that's why the traditional Inuit shaman would only seek her out in times of extreme necessity. But, like it or not, Sedna was tossed into our archetpal and astrological midst on March 15, 2004, when the discovery of the planetary body named for her was announced. She'll offer us the same choices over and over again until we finally stop ducking her questions and answer them, directly and honestly.

So, again, up front and personal: how do I relate to those parts of myself I once defiined as "outcast"?. What might happen if I opened my heart, mind and soul to myself and let me in?

What kind of world might I help create then? No need for my bleeding heart to wear rose colored glasses, or for my rigid mind to create harsh punishment in order to keep the wayward parts of myself in line. Maybe instead the kind of fluid grace associated with the ocean, Sedna's realm. And she's not just ruler of the Arctic any longer. She's here in our astrology charts to remind us there's only one ocaen of consciousness. She's here to teach us to swim.

Uranus Moving to Station

When Uranus, like any othe planetary body, moves to station, it meanss it appears to "stop" moving in one direction and "start" moving in another. The movemenr can be retrograde -- apparently backward -- or direct -- apparently forward -- but in eiahter case, moving to station means seeing to slow down ans stop at a particular degree of a particular sign of the zodiac, then apparently switching direction.

It's an illusion, of course, as I've discussed in posts about Mercury retrograde. Nevertheless, when a celestial body moves to station, it's a period of of time when its operations seem slow enough to come to a halt, just as a car has to come to a stop in neutral before safely changing gears from first to reverse, or vise versa. (Those of you who only drive automatic rather than what was once "standard shift", trust me on this one.)

Today Uranus appears by astrological transit at 22 degrees, 39 minutes Pisces. He'll stay at 22 degrees 39 minutes Pisces for a week, going retrograde in the middle of that time, on June 27th. (It will be late in the evening of the 26th here in North America). Three days is his time most precisely at station: 22 degrees, 39.4 minutes Pisces. But this slow-down to station always has a broader effect than that precision indicates.

In February this year, for example, Uranus zipped through 17 degrees Pisces in just nineteen days. He'll spend a total of eighty-three days -- May 17 to the 17th of September -- at 22 degrees Pisces at this slow moving time in his cycle. That's just the way it is when any planetary body's moving to or from station. In March 2009, Uranus will move through 22 degrees of Pisces again, but galloping through in just 18 days.

Astrology Tutorial: Venus in the sign of Cancer and the Dilemmas od Letting Go

Yesterday's post mentioned the lack of enthusiasm the water signs have for making choices. Each of the water signs has her own reasons for resisting choice-making, of course, but they all have something to do with that old human problem of letting go. Dysfunctions in this area can take many forms, from always holding on no matter what, to a habitual knee-jerk "I'm outta here!". With Venus, the planet most aligned with the emotional intake aspects of well-being, currently in the water sign with tenacious crab claws, the dilemma is emphasized if letting go is presently required.

Cancer loves creating a homplace where she can surround herself with biological or chosen family. The metaphor seeps into the rest of her life: any letting go is like letting go of family.

Scorpio has secrets. Ever try to get a genuine and spontaneous personal response from someone with an important personal birth chart focus in Scorpio? It won't happen 'til she gets to know you. Even then she'll only confide in someone she considers valuable, for what she values she wants to keep near as well as dear. That's the dilemma she has with ;etting go: how can she let go og what's so valuable to her? And if she's sepnt time on, or with, something or someone, it has value to her, and she will not often spend it recklessly.

Pisces? She knows that every ocean current has an equal and opposite flow moving in the other direction. She knows, for example, that there's a culd water current moving south below the warm northward flow of water in the Gulf Stream. So, for her, letting go of one or the other is a matter of choosing only half and being unfaithful to the whole Truth as she feels it flow.

Venus, and the water signs are steeped in all that's Mysterious. So what if these feminine archetypes aren't good at letting go? Maybe we here in North Anerica have put too much emphasis on solving the dilemma and not enough heart into cherishing the Mystery.

Astrology Tutorial: The Sun into the Moon's Sign; and Sedna

Today's the first full day of the Sun's journey through the water sign Cancer this year, so the astrology tutorial for today looks at the Sun as he begins his annual trek through the sign of the zodiac with the greatest affinity for the Moon. Here in the Moon's sign, homage is paid to the traditional place and sources of nurture: home, kitchen, food, mother. For the month that ths sun shines his light here, we'll all find ourselves involved with this sign's important focal points one way or another. Haven't you ever wondered why, here in the States, this is the time of year when husbands and fathers once more don their chef aprons and take to the grill?

The planetary body Sedna is emphasized here, too, though she's currently moving slowly through Taurus. What has Sedna to do with the Moon's sign? Sedna's traditionally known as the goddess who lives at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean, and her first name among the Inuit people reflected her role among them. They first called their Great Archetypal Mother "Food Dish". And, really, isn't that true, one way or another, for all of us? And since Sedna in the birth chart focuses on those parts of ourselves we've cast aside, with the sun in Cancer it may be wise to look at any unresolved issues involving food, nurture or mother.

Mercury Retrograde to Direct Yesterday, Posting Today

Yesterday Mercury went direct. No more Mercury retrograde for another three months. Now communications, travel, mundane activities began to stabilize after a few weeks of realignment.

My sun and Mercury are in Virgo, a sign with a great affinity for Mercury. Mercury's also the final dispositor in my chart. (More about that some other time; for today, enough to say that makes Mercury even more important in my chart than it would be otherwise. Yesterday we ended our vacation and drove back home. Obedient to the Cosmos, of course... how utterly VIrgo of me.

And today, the first day back home and the first full day Mercury direct, I'm in a whole new place of refreshment. I've enjoyed being away and now I'm enjoying feeling renewed, back in my regular homeplace and back to my more "regular" life.

Two Relocation Astrology Charts Compared, Part 2

As you may know from yesterday's post, here on the Schoodic Peninsula, my relocated astrology chart has a VIrgo rising sign, not Leo. There are a few other differences in this relocation astrology chart from my current homeplace and natal charts, too. Here, my third house Mars shifts into my second house.

My natal third house Mars in Libra has something to do with making my living, at least in part, through communication with my voice, and in another part through the creation of beauty (wall quilts and other fiber arts).

My current homeplace also has a third house Mars in Libra. That has lots to do with why, in my current living place, I became a member of Toastmasters and achieved ATM-Bronze before I left the organization.

Mars in the second house, here, is, yes, in my second house of values. That house also focuses on creating income and points toward career growth. Is that why I'm working today and tomorrow, despite the word "vacation" on my calendar? Is that part of why I'm still blogging daily instead of just posting "See ya on June 20th!" as of June 12?

As an astrologer looking at my relocated chart, I'd say yes. If you're wondering why, as a relocation astrologer, I'd choose to vacation in a place where I work well, too, I'd say, "Here, friendship has as high a value as anything else in my chart, and so I both visit old friends and make new friends here. And my work, these two days, is with friends old and new."

It sounds like a win-win situation to me. But as a woman at least nominally on vacation, I've got something else to say today, better late than never. It's this: "See ya on the 20th!"

Two Relocation Astrology Charts Compared, Part 1

I'm in Maine right now, close to Canada, about 700 miles from my birthplace and 400 miles northeast of my current homeplace in the Berkshire Hills. This coastal village feels like home, too; we visit every year, so I'm comparing my two relocated astrology charts with my natal chart. Here's my first report on some of the most important differences I've found.

At my birthplace, my chart reads Leo rising, with both my sun and Mercury in my Virgo second house. When I was four years old, I was already weilding a watercolor paintbrush and had thoroughly imprinted on Ethel Merman singing the lead role in "Annie Got Your Gun". I sketched a lot --Virgo loves to use her hands to create beauty -- and also spent a number of teen years belting out songs from Broadway show tunes into an at-home fantasy microphone. (This was pre-kareoke.) Yet the values of my second-house Virgo played a huge role in my early choice to turn that drive toward theater and the arts into a BFA in sculpture with teaching certification.

In the Berkshires, I keep Leo as my rising sign, but my Virgo sun and Virgo Mercury both slip into my first house. Goodbye to teaching in a school system, hello to being one of the seven core members of an alternative health care and spiritual growth center. Hello to going public as an astrologer, using what I call "the art and science of compassion" in a public way as an act of service. Hello to going public with it, too, on the web.

Here on the Schoodic Peninsula, suddenly I have Virgo rising, with my sun and Mercury in the first house. Goodbye to any drive toward center stage, hello to nestling into simplicity. This morning at breakfast our friends Bob and Barry described someone's newly-built house as "almost austere in its simplicity".

"That sounds so wonderful," I heard myself say, though my style of decorating, as I'm familiar with it, normally includes unusual artifacts from a variety of world cultures displayed in and on an eclectic melange of cases and tables. And while my VIrgo Sun and Mercury see to it that the artifacts are beautiful, authentic and useful, "austere" is a word I'd never apply to my home place. At least, not yet. At least, maybe not unless I set up housekeeping here. Or someplace else with Virgo rising in my relocated chart.

Vacation Relocation Astrology and Today's Void of Course Moon

Retrograde Neptune Today

Neptune's known in almost any astrology tutorial as King of the Ocean. Where there's that much open water, at least some of the time there's fog. It's no surprise then that Neptune's keywords include, foggy, hazy, mysterious, oceanic, tidal. Through his kinship with the tides, the element of repetitive, rhythmic sound is his, too including dance, which leads to romance nad a generally romantic world view, Pn the more challenging side, his keywords also include substance abuse, co-dependence, alcohol. Because he resonates, too, with the non-linear hemisphere of the brain, he's mind-altering, and intuitive.

Since the sound of the foghorn belongs to Neptune, too, he provides warning signs of danger. But maybe that's retrograde Neptune, Neptune changing tactics, mabe like an oceanic leaopard changing his spots. Retrograde Neptune says, "The fog is lifting; look for clarity ahead!" Of course, that can mean taking a look around and realizing you're in a pretty scary landscape, but Neptune is always a symbol of great faith. In fact, Neptune acts so naturally on faith that he seldom stops to ask himself, or anyone else, "Is my faith well-placed in -- this person? this organization? ...this substance? ...this idea? ...this dream? Or am I betting on an illusion?"" But once she realizes she's been wandering in the fog, and realizes that is wandering's takning him farrther and farther from his most authentic dreams, Neptune often has the humility and courage to leave the familiar foggy bottom and go on to bravely place his faith in something better. Let Neptune reyrograde provide the opportunity for someone to show you how.

Sure, faith is required, too, when Neptune's fog rolls in and shrouds the landscpe in mystery, but when Neptune goes retrograde, as it does today, the fog starts to clear. Now it's time to at least consider taking action to assist the clearing process. Join AA. Leave a cult. Use cash instead of your credit card. Start taking dancing lessons. Learn to paint with water colors. Buy a camera. Honor the end of your defunct career as a Hollywood clown and use your skills to help children in hospitals laugh.

Sometimes the combo of vacation and Mercury retrograde is a joy. I learned that most thoroughly for the first time more than 20 years ago. It was a few days after we'd bought non-refundable plane tickets on a buufget that then didn't allow for flexibility that I realized we were flying south to the Gulf of Mexico on the first day of a Mercury retrograde cycle.\\True confession: I had a moment of , Oh no, the plane will fall out of the sky or something, but then I got a grip.

"OK, chances are better than I can imagine that that's not going to happen," I said to myself. I reminded myself that catastrophizing wasn't going to help. I reminded myself thar if I were my client, I'd probably ask me, "Well, what do you think might be the best thing that could happen in these circumstances?"

I couldn't think of anything. I packed an extra novel in my carry-on bag, in case we were delayed at the airport.

But the next day, reality bit. I realized that this Mercury retrograde vacation we'd scheduled so casually was going to be the first non-working vacation I'd taken in almost 10 years. And that was certainly an out-of-the-ordinary -- that is, retrograde -- enough use of time to suit anyone. Even that Mercury transit. Even me.

We had a great time, of course, and now we have the privilege of taking one or two vacations a year. In fact, we're setting out for Maine tomorrow morning. I can hardly wait to see what happens this time.

Your Relocation Astrology Project, 2: Ascendant and Midheaven

As she examines your birth chart in a series of potential relocation sites, your astrologer watches your Ascendant and Midheaven shift. In some spots they just change degree within your natal signs. Elsewhere, one, or both, move into new signs entirely. Intercepted signs come and go, too. Some new intercepts mirror the necessity for powerful change in how you habitually express yourself. Others suggest that others may respond to you in whole new ways. .

Shifts to the Midheaven and the Ascendant -- the parts that change most -- affect how you experience the aspects, the parts of your birth chart that stay the same no matter where you go. Midheaven changes have a lot to do with your career and public persona. Alteration to the Ascendant is more personal, and reflects more about the way you are comfortable presenting yourself.

Once the Ascendant and Midheaven shifts are taken into account and your relocation astrologer's found some sites that seem to resonate with your hopes and goals, she'll get out her magnifying glass. Sure, the Midheaven and the Ascendant look right, and the Sun, for example, is well aspected here. What about the Moon, the planets and the other planetary bodies? Now she's likely to find more locations to red pencil. There'll be more back story, more details you never hear about. Like a good writer, a good relocation astrologert knows "back story" is important. It's the only way for her to do the best job for you that she possibly can.

Your Relocation Astrology Project, 1: "Back Story"

When your astrologer begins work on your relocation astrology project, she's doing a lot more for you than meets the eye. First, she reviews your goals for your move, and the other important details that you and she discussed in your intake interview. Then she runs your birth information through her computer system and creates your birth chart at your actual birth location. She takes the time to become deeply familiar with your natal chart. Then she wades through a lot of what writers call "back story."

In writing, "back story" is made up of everything the author knows about her characters and their histories. To write about them well, she has to know who these characters were before the action of the novel starts. All the details she knows are vitally important to the unfolding story as it appears in the narrative, but they're never directly mentioned in the text. In astro-relocation, the "back story" is made up of the many and varied details that your relocation astrologer's aware of, but the large majority of that never makes it into her final presentation.

Why? Maybe some of these places, for one reason or another, suggest they're spots where you're likely to encounter the most difficult aspects of your chart presented to you in a very challenging manner. Or they're places where you're likely to find the most supportive aspects of your natal chart compromised. In other words, her expertise with astrology acts like a really good editor. She'll "red pencil" some locations, and toss them into the mental waste bin labeled "Don't Go There. Please, don't go there."

And sure, she'll mention at least some of these spots in her final presentation, especially if one or more of them were on your "Check These Places First" list. She'll tell you what the chart suggests you look out for in any of these places you might have your heart set on. But the full, detailed nuance of the astrological "back story"? Not unless you already speak astrology. Even then, it's "back story," the material she has to know to do her job but which may not be actually of interest to you. After all, don't you want to know where your hopes and goals are more likely to flower?

Tomorrow's topic? Two primary location-based shifts that set the river of details she wades through into motion.

Sedna, Direct

Sedna, the planetary body now available for interpretation in the astrology chart, was named for the Inuit goddess who lives at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean.

"Do you dare speak your truth?" she asks. "What about the outcast? Are you ignoring the gifts of the parst of yourself, or the ones in your life that you refuse to acknowledge? And what about hope? Are your hopes hung on a false persona, or is hope free to lift you above the appearance of things?" She asks harsh questions, but that's both life-challenging and life-saving compassion in a harsh climate.

Face to face encounters with Sedna require courage. The traditional Inuit shaman only journeys to Sedna when there's compelling reason, when The People aare starving or their future seems at stake in some other way.
When he finds her, he does his best to present himself, and to state The People's case, in a way that softens Sedna's cold manner.

To assist the shaman's journey to Sedna, ask yourself:
Are there any people in my culture whose needs my culture ignores?
Is there anyone in my personal world have I cast away as unworthy? (Yes, this is different from setting healthy boundaries.)
Are there any parts of my personality that I refuse to see unless I project these qualities onto others?
How else might I see them?
Do any of these outcasts speak to my heart, mind and soul?
What blessings might I offer them?

Take this all into meditation today as you prepare to take the best advantage of Sedna's forward movement. How will you help her as she prompts you to speak from the heart of a strong compassion for both yourself and for others?

Can you imagine living in a world that benefits all Sedna's children: the humans, the canines, and the mammals of the sea?

The Moon in June

This month started with the moon in one of her waning phases. That means she's closing a cycle, as if she turns her face away bit by bit to let things gestate, from her full phase last May 20th (2:12 am GMT; late May 19 Eastern time) until tomorrow's new moon (7:24 pm GMT).
The new moon is a planting time, an act of faith, from our point of view, until we realize she hasn't actually turned her face away. She's just mirroring to us our need to go inward, to see what seeds we want to plant, what needs our attention now and for the next two weeks. Whatever receives our attention will "grow corn" and flourish.
So take a look around. Use this evening and tomorrow morning to clean up any leftover projects that you might otherwise trip over in the "planting" time that is the waxing or growing period that follows the new moon. Or, if it would be healthy and profitable to do so, put the unfinished business you can safely delay into "sleep" mode until the next waxing, or "tending the garden" cycle begins with the full moon. This month the Full Moon blooms on June 18.
Ye, the sign fo the zodiac the moon is in modifies all this a bit, but that's a detail for another time. For now, just remember, the Moon's a silent partner who wants to support and nurture us in all we do. All she asks is a little cooperation, a little attention. Consider hanging out wiht her this month. You don;t even have to look for her as she changes her appearance in the night, or daytime, sky. Just being aware that she's there is enough.

Is Anything Else Retrograde Out There Right Now?

Q: Is anything else besides Mercury retrograde out there right now?
A: Pluto, Neptune, and Jupiter are retrograde now, too. This month, Mercury leaves the "retro" pack on the 19th, and Uranus joins the pack on the 27th. Sedna's been at station since April, after being retrograde since January 2006. She'll be moving direct in a way that can be measured by June 3rd. Tne North Node of the Moon's retrograde at the moment, and for most of the month, too, but that's a whole other story. I'll set up a post about that sometime in the future, if anybody asks for one.

Q: Isn't that a lot?
A: Yeah, it is. Currently, late spring into early autumn's the peak retrograde time of year. It's a time when the idea of moving and a feeling of shift and change gets stirred up on the physical level, too. Maybe that has something to do with why even more savvy folks than usual choose relocation astrology as a great navigation tool at this time of year.

Q: And when these other planetary bodies are retrograde, what else can I expect to experience?
A: Large question, small room for answers, but here's an overview, which I'll expand on in tomorrow's post.

Pluto retrograde's a signpost for turmoil and transcendence. It always requires surrender to that part of Spirit or Self that's larger than the personality acting in isolation.

Retrograde Neptune says, "The fog is lifting; look for clarity ahead!" Of course, that can mean noticing that you're on the brink of stepping into dog poop. Now you get to consciously choose whether to back up or step forward, instead of blaming the Universe, or hte dog owner, for what might wind up between your toes

The retrograde movement of Uranus? It's hard to categorize Uranian anything, since all things Uranian throve "outside the box".

Sedna asks, "What's your relationship to, or with, the outcast?" Sedna's only been part of our conscious awareness since 2003, and I'll post more about her on June 3. But don't skip the post for tomorrow. That's a short ramble on the moon.

The Opposite of Retrograde

Q: What's the opposite of retrograde movement?
A: The opposite movement is called "direct": a retrograde heavenly body seems to slow down, then seems to come to a complete stop just before it changes from retrograde to direct. Getting from retrograde to direct is like backing your car out of the garage, then stopping before you shift into first gear.

Q: You mean whatever's moving retrograde really comes to a stop before it changes direction?
A: Just like the apparent retrograde movement itself, this isn't really happening. It's an illusion, again having to do with the relative speeds of Earth and whatever other plaentary body's involved, and the angles of the two orbits relative to each other.
When a planetary body shifts from direct to retrograde, an apparent full stop happens again. It looks just like the same thing that actually happens when you're driving and need to parallel park. First you put your foot on the brake and bring the car to a complete stop before you shift into reverse. In either direction, that slow down is called "moving to station"and stop is called "being stationary".

Mercury Retrograde, 4

Q: Just what IS retrograde movement, anyway?
A: Only during Mercury retrograde would we get to the 4th post on the subject before this question came up. It's the apparent backward trek that Mercury, or another planetary object takes, during a specific time of connection between its orbit and Earth orbit.

It's not actually happening, of course. It's just the way it look from our vantage point here on Earth. It's the same kind of mind game my eyes used to play when I lived in Manhattan and hopped onto the local (subway train). I'd sit there, minding my own business and sooner or later, an express train would roar by the window, moving in the same direction as the train I was on, but at a much greater speed. If I glanced out the window, often enough the express train would seem to be hurtling backwards. Which, of course, it wasn't.

Why, how come, and what are the physics involved? I dunno... One of us is going to ahve to ask a physicist. Or general science teacher. Any responders out there?

Mercury Retrograde. 3

A: It started May 26th at 3:29 pm GMT and continues until June 19 at 2:32 pm GMT. (Greenwich Mean Time's the time in London,)

Q: You mentioned this an an earlier post, but say it again: How should I navigate Mercury retrograde to get the best from what presents itself?
A: Expect the unexpected. Especially in the way you think about the events and things that are so ordinary in your life you usually drive through them unconcsioucsly. Remember, the theme here is, Wake up! You might find glitches, or funny anomalies, in the way your household appliances work. Several of my friends find this is the time when their household light bulbs blow out, and not always the same ones in the same lamps, so it doesn't have anything to do with a timed light-bulb-life-span! Or you might find a wake-up call in travel: Where are my car keys? Or maybe you'll find MErcury retro a miror in which you see the ways others respond to you in a new light. which reminds me of a great reminder for this time: Keep your sense of humor handy. You'll probably need it!

Mercury retrograde, 2

When I published yesterday's post about Mercury retrograde, I'd forgotten something and had to go back and edit. While the corrected post was loading I found myself drumming my fingers, muttering "Come on, come on..." just as if I'd never heard of Mercury retro, and never heard of annoyance as one of the Buddha's many pathways to enlightenment. So today, a little Q & A about the topic.

Q: How often does Mercury go retrograde?
A: About four times a year.

Q: How long does Mercury stay retrograde?
A: About three weeks each time.

Q: Yikes! Isn't that about three months a year?
A: Yes, but take a deep breath. That's probably a smaller percentage of time than the number of hours you spend asleep each year.

Q: So?
A: Sleep's pretty ordinary, right? We all do it. And it's also, well, obviously different from our usual waking awareness. Last time I checked, 7 to 9 hours of daily sleep were still considered medically necessary for optimum health. In other words, we humans seem to be neurologically hard-wired to move in and out of our usual mode of thinking on at least a daily basis.

So, consider this: since slipping in and out of the way we habitually navigate daily reailty can be very comforting and healthy, any Mercury retrograde frustration can be seen as just a way the Universe suggests that none of us get too stuck in our own habit-stupor. It seems the Universe wants us to wake up, too.

Mercury's retrograde again, and that's the good news.

Good news? Given the level of annoyance or frustration that retrograde Mercury can herald, why celebrate? Because along with the troubles with mundane reality -- travel, communications, services, contracts, servants, including our electronic servants: cell and land-line phones, computers, TV and e-media in general, as well as the satellites that anchor them -- Mercury retograde also ushers in a time when things that have been really stuck start to free up and move ahead.

When I was a little girl I adored Laura Ingalls WIlder's series of "Little House" books. In one of them she describes sitting in the covered wagon on the shore while the family was moving from one home to another. Ice covered the expanse of water in front of them. The weather had started to warm and the ice snapped and creaked with the change in temperature. She described the time of waiting while her Pa decided whether or not to drive the team across to the other shore before the ice broke up for the spring. He deicded to go. The family crossed the water safely and continued their journey.

During Mercury retrograde, too, caution is advised, not thoughtless impulse. Things may or may not be what they seem. Contracts need review by several pairs of trustworthy eyes. Even when there's no intention to deceive, a tyoist might have put the decimal point in the wrongs place, or one party may have completely misunderstood what the other intended to communicate. THe car keys may turn up in the laundry basket, or the bicycle tire goes flat during the race.

Why not just hide unitil Mercury retrograde's over, then? If we decide I'm your relocation astrologer, there's lots for me to do before we're back in contact again for your first appointment. Relocation astrology isn't magic. It takes attention, focus, hope, heart and persistence along with astrological know-how. First, I put your birth information into my system and print out your birth chart. As I look at your birth chart, how do I go about the beginning the extensive research required for relocation astrology? I begin, sustain, and end my research by coupling your hopes for your move with my professional skills as a practicing relocation astrologer.

First I'll explore your birth chart as it creates your foundations at your actual birthplace. I'll examine in depth the ways the sun, moon, planets and certain astroids interact in your chart, and note their positions in the various houses. Then I'll relocate your chart to various places of interest to you and consider the astrological "lay of the land" for you there.

Whatever your reason for your move, I'll be looking for certain astrological "landmarks" as I consider your relocated birth chart. At the same time, I also scan for aspects that suppport your hopes for the new location. As I examine a particular location, I may see a challenging dynamic involving the new Ascendant or Midheaven, or some other factor that suggests a whole geographic area would be less than serving to you. At another site, I may find a newly-emphasized aspect already present in your birth chart, a significant house shift, or some plaetary alignment that suggests this spot as a supportive environment for your move. As you might expect with research, sometimes those affirming aspects show up more easily than others.

Especially when your hopes or your move center on career success, it's important to consider the position of the sun, and your sun sign, in relationship to the relocated Midheaven in your relocated astrology chart.

"The sun" means the degree of a zodiac sign where the sun was located in your birth chart, like 17 degrees Aries or 21 degrees Gemini. And "your sun sign" is the sign of th zodiac you mean when you say, "I'm an Aries," or "I'm a Gemini," or whatever sign is yours.) The best way for me to start today's post is to misquote Shakespeare's Juliet. In relocation astrology, one of the biggest questions is, "Jupiter, Oh Jupiter: Wherefore Art Thou, Jupiter?" It's a big question about a big planet, and it may not surprise you that Jupiter has a big astrological impact, wherever he shows up.

If your birth chart shows a challenging aspect to Jupiter, relocation may soften the cold, hard edges of your Jupiter-focused dilemmas. However, since Jupiter symboizes warmth and benevolence, one of his archetypes is that jovial guy who slides down the chimney in December with a whole sack full of delightful goodies. Your inner landscape isn't a place in what a shaman or shamanic practitioner calls ordinary reality. It's a phrase that describes the non-ordinary reality of your inner landscape. It's a place made of fire, earth, air and water, but not fire that cooks your dinner, not earth your feet stand on, not air you breathe into your lungs, not even water that runs through your fingers.

These four building blocks, these elements of construction, have non-ordinary meanings in non-ordinary reality. Fire is the radiance of Creative Spirit; Water is the Flow of Passion which moves the Creator. That movement Air, the Breath of Life which animates Earth, the material substance of What Is Created. Even our ordinary reality was described that way untilonly a few hundred years ago, even in western Europe.

Maybe it's still that way in the metaphoric world of your inner landscape. Maybe that's the allure some folks have for well-written science ficgtion, and for astrology. After all, they both describe realities that almost, but not quite, fit into the way we describe the world of things.

Relocation Astrology: Are You Already Living It?

If your home is anywhere other than the place listed on your birth certificate, you're already living an astro-relocation chart. For some people, even a relatively small move shows significant change in how the birth chart dynamics play out.

I live in New England, about 350 miles east of my birthplace. It's an area of the country we drove through often when I was a child, on family trips to Cape Cod, Boston, or the beaches in southern Maine. I always loved being here; at the time, I'd probably have said it was because I liked the ice cream, and the hot dogs with their funny little bread-loaf buns at the Howard Johnson's restaurants on the Mass Pike back then. I might have said I was happy to see the white birch trees we didn't have at home; that I enjoyed the excitement of being on vacation, and my anticipation of being near the ocean. Whatever the reason, whenever I got to this part of the world, I felt really, really good.

Astrology never compels anything, so I was mostly just curious when I compared my natal chart with my chart for my current home place for the first time. Superficially, they looked a lot alike, of course; my astro-relocation chart's a variation on the theme of who-I-am, not a new identity. But when I looked at the charts side by side, the technical shifts I saw affirmed my memories from childhood, and underlined my life-path here as an adult.

In the chart set up at my birthplace, the sun is in the first house of my chart. First house can be described as "the self one presents to the world".

My first house begins with the sign of Leo, and one of Leo's archetypes is "the actor". With that information in isolation, one would assume that I'd enjoy the experience of being visible, recognized, and generally comfortable in the public eye, as first house Leo promises. But my sun is in the sign of Virgo; each of the signs has its challenges and one of the dilemmas a young Virgo often experiences more deeply than most is anxiety. I worried about anyone else seeing the real child instead of the good-child persona that was my idealized hope and fallback position.

One of the most significant changes in my relocated chart is that, though I keep my Leo first house here, my sun is in the second house, and I love that. Lots of reasons why, of course, but high on my list is this: here I can channel all the Virgo energy that I once spent on worry about what others were thinking, and use my Virgo detail awareness and my gifts for handcrafts and language any way I want to. (Other Virgos note: here I can even end a sentence with "to"...).

Here my Leo Rising sign (the zodiac sign where the first house starts). Here my Lion sign comes into her own, instead of being continually arm-wrestled to the ground by the Good Girl, like a strange twist on the Waite-Ryder image of the Tarot card called "Strength". Here I am Lioness and A Very Good Mouser, too.

Yes, I would have grown and matured no matter where I'd lived those years between childhood and now. Maybe elsewhere, too, my Leo Rising and Virgo Sun would have stopped being conjoined twins and become strong, independent, inter-dynamic allies. But, according to the reading of the charts long after the experience, here's where I could expect to enjoy being visible and find good use for natural Virgo gifts, both.

In my location of origin, it's difficult to separate these two parts of myself. In my current home location, I enjoy taking opportunities to nurture both aspects. I wonder, are you living a relocatgion chart, too?

Our research may show that the locations you chose and your priorities dovetail quite nicely. But if our research shows that your priorities might have thrive better elsewhere, we'll already have the information we need to develop a backup plan for you to consider.

On the other hand, maybe you're still sifting through your lists of dreams and locations. If there are a lot of things you hope for, we'll help you consider the specifics: "Why do you want to move? What's at the very top of your 'Hope For' list? More financial success? Romance? Marriage or partnership? Community involvement? Recognition? An active family life? "
